SANGEETAYAN is a school of music dedicated to the dissemination of Indian Music in the New England Area. It was founded by Sagarika Kanjilal in 1999. Sangeetayan brings together the deep understanding and appreciation of both Hindustani classical as well as traditional music. Students of all ages get the opportunity to learn with care, practice for perfection and perform with confidence through the painstaking training and guidance of their teacher, Sagarika. Sangeetayan presents programs in various events throughout the year, including fund raisings efforts for various worthy causes.
ABOUT THE TEACHER
SAGARIKA KANJILAL obtained her M.A. in Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and was awarded Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. Her training in Hindustani Classical music had been in the Patiala Gharana. She received her training in Nazrul Geeti from the maestro Biman Mukhopadhyay, who is the guru of many established artists of Kolkata, and is especially known for setting tunes to many songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Ms. KANJILAL specializes in the genres of thumri, tappa, Najrul Geeti, and devotional songs. She has won numerous awards in music competitions throughout her musical career. Ms. Kanjilal has performed on numerous occasions in India and England, including BBC Radio. She has been teaching music for the past 22 years. After coming to the USA, she has been performing regularly in the New England area and has received wide acclaim from audiences.
